I have read the above syllabus with my son or daughter and he or she has explained to me how the students will be evaluated in the Math 40SPF course, how to get in contact with M. Gusberti if I have questions, how the outline to the course is set up, when extra help is offered.
If the teacher and administration see’s that any student is struggling or their effort is lacking, then the administration has the right to withdraw the student from the course.

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY AND HONESTY

River East Transcona School Division recognizes that academic responsibility and honesty are part of the overall development of a student’s sense of responsibility, skills, and values.
Definition of terms:

Responsibility includes completing assignments and submitting assignments on the designated due date.
Honesty includes completing assignments in a truthful and responsible way. There will be consequences for cheating, lying, and plagiarizing. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student and using cheat notes. Lying refers to the deliberate misrepresentation or fabrication of facts regarding one’s contribution to group work, or circumstances to obtain extensions. Plagiarizing is the deliberate presentation by a student of an assignment which has in fact been copied –in part or in whole-from another source (e.g. electronic texts, published books, periodicals, encyclopedias, etc.), without due acknowledgement in the text. This includes the copying of words, ideas, phrases, photographs, diagrams, statistics, definition, etc. To avoid plagiarism, students must document the source of information within the assignment.
Consequences:

Students must understand that there will be consequences for not completing assignments that provide evidence of learning or for submitting those assignments late.
If a student shows no evidence of learning because an assignment is late or missing, the teacher will implement strategies, such as:

  • Confer with the student, and possibly the parent/guardian, about the reasons for not completing the assignment.

  • Develop an agreement with the student to complete the assignment.

  • Require the student to complete the assignment during school time (class period or spare period), at lunch, or after school.

If these strategies are unsuccessful in supporting the student to complete assignment or if there is no legitimate reason for the late assignment, teachers may deduct 5% from the possible assignment value. If an assignment is missing without a legitimate reason, teachers will record the assignment as NHI (Not Handed In). If the student fails to complete the assignment within the time frame provided, the NHI will become the qualified grade of zero.
Students must understand that there will be consequences for academic dishonesty. If the severity of the dishonest behaviour is at a minor level (i.e. the student has attempted to cite sources, but has done so improperly), then it will become a teachable moment and the student will be given the opportunity to redo the assignment. If the severity of the dishonest behavior is at a major level (deliberate cheating, lying, or plagiarizing), then an office intervention will be required. The teacher and the administration will determine the level of consequences.
The teacher/administration will:

  • Inform the student’s parents/guardians of the offense

  • Document the incident in the student’s file

  • Ensure that the student completes the work honestly, though there may not be a grade attributed to the assignment.

In addition, the teacher and administration may determine that one or more additional consequences will be implemented:

  • Enforce the loss of privileges for the student at school

  • Detention

  • Suspension

A mark of zero on the assignment.
